Chapter Sixteen
In the grand scheme of things, Jordan and Zelda had only scratched the surface of what needed to be done to the Karmann Ghia. Even with the help of some of Zeldaâs friends over the weekend, it felt as though he was leaving her with just as much work as there had been when heâd arrived.
âIâm so glad you came home to help me get started,â Zelda told him as he was packing up his car. âIâll come help you out with the Cougar in a couple of weeks.â
âI appreciate it,â he told her. âBut youâve got your hands full if you want to focus on that thing.â He waved a hand toward the Ghia, the husk of which stared at them from the open garage door.
âI might need a little break,â she admitted. âIâd like to see where youâre working. Meet the mechanic youâre renting the bay from. You know me, Iâm nosy.â
âRight.â He pulled her into another hug. âI better get going. I have plans with friends tonight.â
âDonât be a stranger. Be safe. Remember to call us occasionally,â Zelda reminded.
âI will. See you in a few weeks,â he promised.
He slid behind the wheel and started the long ride back to the city.
Heath met him at the door.
âShit. The last time I came back from home, you accosted me with the information that Rachel was getting married and I was an asshole to her.â
âYeah,â Heath nodded. âIâm glad you remembered. We need to figure out our suit fittings and shit. Did you at least stop and say hello to her while you were home?â
âI ran into her at the grocery store and we caught up a little. She looks good,â Jordan replied. âShe didnât mention wedding attire though.â
âShe texted right after she saw you. You jogged her memory. You have that effect on her.â
âIâm free when I need to be,â Jordan assured him. âBut can we hammer it out later? Iâd like to unpack.â
âYeah, go ahead.â Heath stepped out of the way to allow him down the hall to his bedroom. âOh! The official invitations arrived. Weâre going to have to let her know about our Plus-Ones, okay?â
âIâll have to figure that date out, huh?â Jordan winced. He wasnât sure what the procedure was in asking your polyam boyfriend to be a date to a wedding.
Wow. Wedding. It was coming fast, he pondered as he started emptying his suitcase. Heâd pushed it out of his head since theyâd agreed to be bridesmen. It was strange to think of Rachel âmarriedâ. He didnât feel old enough to be doing such a grown-up thing. Perhaps that was the five-year age difference.
His phone buzzed in his pocket. Kyleâs name and VIDEO CALL flashed on the screen. He hit accept, holding the phone up.
âHey!â Kyleâs face grinned at him through the screen. âYouâre back in town?â
âI just finished unpacking,â Jordan replied. âWhatâs up?â
âI know weâre seeing each other later, but I need a break. Can I come over?â
âOf course, you can,â Jordan assured him.
